Community transparency report

Preface

As part of building community at PyCon AU this year, Matt Cengia led our ‘community team’, tasked with exemplifying the conference’s community values as well as being a point of support and contact relating to our Code of Conduct. These efforts are analogous with what the ‘Safety team’ focused on at previous PyCons AU, but under a slightly tweaked name to address the team’s intended impact and goals.

The team also collaborated with the organising team & venue on several improvements around the conference space including:

• Improvements to venue layout to better sign-post catering for dietary requirements.
• Iterations on signage clarity and locations.

I would also like to warmly thank Matt for their consultation and guidance in the lead up to PyCon AU as we planned several operational matters such as lanyard design, staffing plans and room usage (e.g. quiet rooms).

Transparency report

The Community Team noted two minor incidents this year.

• A delegate expressed that a lightning talk made jokes at the expense of others, in violation of the code of conduct. We communicated this anonymously with the speaker and organising team, and communicated our response to the reporter, who was grateful for the follow-up.
• We received a heads-up from an attendee about a talk whose slides made thinly veiled references to illicit drug use by CEOs. The attendee didn’t indicate they expected any action to be taken, so we simply noted the report.

We’d like to thank everyone at PyCon AU who helped make the conference a positive and memorable experience again this year.
